About Us:
Charlottesville Day School is an elementary and preschool in its second year of operations. It serves 142 children from diverse backgrounds who are led by a staff of 24 educators.
The school is grounded on two basic tenets. First, the school believes in educating and nurturing the whole child. This translates to an emphasis, rather than devaluing, of music, art, and physical education. For example, students at CDS learn to sing together, recognize musical genres and even write music at an early age. We believe these activities promote a positive learning environment and lead to success in traditional academic subjects.
Second, the school passionately believes in differentiation, small class sizes and other best practices in education. In other words, CDS recruits and supports those teachers who embrace the teaching strategies that leading teachers colleges believe work best. These teachers believe that children learn when they feel a sense of ownership in the learning process and they are safe to take creative risks. At CDS, we dilligently give our wonderful teachers the opportunity to do what they do best.
