From the Head of School:

Dear CDS Parents,

As our children enjoy their own bedrock traditions at home, they are engaged in a new school-wide theme on "cultures" here at CDS.    During this unit, our students will have the chance to examine, explore and celebrate other cultures around the world and within our community.  This is a joyful unit for our faculty that provides a compelling context to teach science, literature, geography, social studies and other topics.  We trust that this theme indirectly encourages our youngsters to enjoy the differences between and among themselves and also other people within the Charlottesville community.  As a parent, I wonder about the unique opportunities this generation of kids will have to speak, eat, study, and work with people from different backgrounds and cultures.  This reality makes our school-wide theme especially exciting.

We hope that you enjoyed the Thanksgiving Break and are looking forward to the holidays ahead and the chance to enjoy some quiet time with the amazing children that you share with us. We know you are busy, but ask that you remember a few things on the CDS calendar.  First, we will have a Coffee Talk on December 4th at the end of the Parent Action Committee Meeting at 7:00 PM in the Theater.  All parents are invited to attend PAC Meetings and Coffee Talk. It is a great time to ask questions. Second, we will have our Winter Whole School Circle on December 19 in the Arena at 11:00 AM (all parents and students should attend).  Third, there is a voluntary, of course, parent night out at Escafe (on the Downtown Mall) on December 20th.  This event is open to the public, but a percentage of all proceeds from the night will be donated to CDS.  We have nothing to lose. We would appreciate your support if you can arrange it and encourage you to invite friends.  Last, we remind you to return your Priority Enrollment forms as soon as possible.  We have a very bright future at CDS and look forward to crystallizing the framework of our plans for next year and beyond.

Finally, I would like to again thank the parents for their amazing support of this school over the last few months.  It is tremendous, heart-warming, greatly appreciated by our wonderful teachers, and, indeed, a necessary part of the community we have built together.  Thank you.

As always, if you ever have any questions about your child's experiences at CDS, please do not hesitate to set a time to meet with me.  Dave, Annelise and the teachers are also available to each of you.

Sincerely,

Stacey Bruns
Head of School
