From the Head of School:Welcome back to school and Happy New Year! The school is blasting off in 2008 with a school-wide theme of outer space and geography. This theme hopefully enhances our youngest students' natural sense of wonder and encourages intellectual curiosity in science for our older students. By the end of the unit, maybe one of our students can tell me, once and for all, whether or not Pluto is a planet. The new year is a great time to mention the newest additions to the school community who came in the form of new born siblings and an adopted bundle of joy from overseas. Congratulations to the Brown, Henry, Kuttner, Foster, Martin, Colbert, Patsch, Cowan, and Talbert families for their new family members who arrived since our first day of school in August (Sorry if I missed you!). The Moody and Moore team can't wait for the fun coming their way. We also have children who have joined our community as students this month. Please welcome John Wootton (Kohstal/Talbert), Ragna Elgjo(Minor/Burton) and Emma Bavaqua (Moody/Moore). It is a pleasure to see these children excited about school and the warmth with which the other kids greet their newest friends. Please mark your calendars for the CDS Talent Show at Live Arts on February 26. Mrs. Kelly's enrichment class will perform a variety of songs ranging from Sweet Home Alabama (who knew?) to Edelweiss. The venue allows for pre-theatre pizza, dumplings, or sushi on the downtown mall if you would want to make an evening of it. Regardless of whether your child is performing that night, we would love to see you in the crowd if you can make time for free, world-class entertainment. I would like to give a special thanks to Dean Krehmeyer and Kim Kotarski in their leadership in helping Dave and I manage CDS's finances. They have done this smoothly and without taxing my time as an educator. I would especially like to thank Dean for volunteering his time and professional skills to his job as Treasurer. It is a challenging job as we grow so fast. Somehow he has proven that the job is being done at the highest level. To follow-up on earlier announcements, please make sure you are arranging your babysitters and gathering auctionable items for the dinner auction on March 29. The Darden School, OXO, and Crozet's Starr Hill Brewery are on board as huge supporters of this event. This will be both a fun night for us all and an important night for the school's future. Thank you to all the volunteers, donors, and future attendees of this event. You will hear more, more, and more about this event in the coming weeks. Finally, as a fellow parent, I leave you with a final thought after a season of wrapping paper and the latest gizmos and gadgets: what can be more exciting to our children than observing, drawing, pondering, discussing, and calculating the stars and planets above? Happy New Year! Stacey
