From the Head of School:

Your kids are amazing.  The faculty has thoroughly enjoyed their growth all year and are seeing them blossom further as spring approaches.  In recent weeks, the elementary kids shined at the school talent show at Live Arts and on their field trip to the Science Museum in Richmond.  The preschool kids continue making wonderful progress socially and academically.  We are blessed with a remarkably talented group of educators.  On a personal level, this is a great time to compare my children with where they each stood in August and thank their teachers for their hard work.

The school is engaged in a school-wide theme of economics and math.  We apologize if your kids are starting to suggest which games, dolls, and gadgets might be easily affordable for your family.  Rest assured, there is more to this academic endeavor than reaching for mom's pocketbook.  Our upper elemntary children are learning sophisticated language related to scarcity, the marketplace, capitalism, and the interdependence of various industries and professions.  Many of the classrooms are learning basic concepts about currency and using them to develop grouping and sorting skills.  Other classrooms are injecting the practical context of budgets into their addition and substraction exercises.  Finally, almost all of the kids are being exposed to the realities of earning, saving, and prioritzing.

On Wednesday, March 12 at 9:00 am and again at 7:00 pm we will have a Coffee Talk featuring a performance by Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Newcomb.  Mrs. Kelly will then teach us more about the CDS music program from top to bottom.  The Coffee Talk will wrap-up with an open forum regarding the school's economics with Treasurer (Dean) and Executive Director (Dave) ready to provide answers.

Please thank the Auction and Family Fitness Fair Committees for their hard work and impressive work to date.  We trust that March 29 and April 27 are marked on your calendars.  Be sure to return your ticket requests for the auction as soon as possible.  Between the great list of items to bid on and the catering by OXO and Starr Hill this night can be practical, fun, and helpful to the school.  Check out the website for further information on both events.

As always, my door is open.
